What Is Orgasmic Learning?
Orgasmic Learning is a state-dependent framework for understanding how orgasmic access may be developed, strengthened, expanded, and transferred through experience and learning, using multiple evidence-informed pathways.
Traditional approaches to female orgasm have often focused on stimulation and psychological and behavioral treatments as the intervention, with limited success in reducing the overall prevalence of orgasmic difficulty.
Orgasmic Learning focuses on accessing and stabilizing the absorbed or altered state in which orgasm becomes possible through six evidence-based orgasmic learning pathways.
Orgasmic Learning asks a different question:
What conditions allow the nervous system to become orgasmic, and can we learn to access those conditions more reliably?
This shift moves the focus from stimulation and trying to orgasm toward state access, neuroplasticity, and the capacity to access and sustain the state in which orgasm becomes possible.
The Core Principle
Orgasm is a bodily function governed by the nervous system.
Published research has documented orgasm arising through genital and non-genital stimulation. Research has also identified six evidence-supported pathways associated with orgasmic access in women with orgasm difficulty: cannabis-assisted, fantasy and imagery, hypnotic induction, LSD-assisted psychotherapy, pelvic floor and somatic-motor activation, and tantra- and breath-based altered states.
Across these six pathways, one shared feature appears to be essential: helping women transition into and sustain an absorbed, altered, or otherwise orgasm-supportive state in which orgasm becomes accessible.
Orgasmic Learning proposes that this state transition is not simply a byproduct of orgasm, but a condition through which orgasm becomes possible. Through repeated experience, the nervous system may become increasingly able to access and sustain this state, strengthening orgasmic access over time. This proposed learning process is consistent with principles of experience-dependent neuroplasticity.
In other words, we may not simply learn how to stimulate the body or quiet the mind.
We may also learn how to become orgasmic.
Six Evidence-Supported Pathways
Research involving women with orgasm difficulty has identified six pathways associated with orgasmic access:
- Cannabis-Assisted
- Fantasy & Imagery
- Hypnotic Induction
- LSD-Assisted Psychotherapy
- Pelvic Floor & Somatic-Motor
- Tantra & Breath-Based Altered States
These six represent the pathways currently supported by the evidence reviewed within the Orgasmic Learning framework. Additional pathways may emerge as the science develops. Research involving MDMA, psilocybin, and other psychedelics suggests potential effects on altered-state access, sexual functioning, and orgasm intensity, but does not yet provide the same direct evidence for improved orgasmic access in women with orgasm difficulty.

From Stimulation to State
The Neuroregulatory Model of Female Orgasm, developed by Suzanne Mulvehill, PhD, proposes that orgasm is a state-dependent neurophysiological process.
Grounded in published research across sexual neuroscience, psychophysiology, and altered-state research, the model describes the regulatory progression through which the nervous system moves toward orgasm and how multiple pathways may converge on shared orgasm-supportive conditions.
Rather than viewing orgasm simply as the endpoint of sufficient stimulation, the model examines the regulatory conditions through which the nervous system progresses toward orgasm.
The model is organized into five neuroregulatory phases:
Safety → State Transition → Absorption → Sensory Amplification → Orgasmic Release

1. Safety
The nervous system has sufficient physiological and psychological safety to reduce threat monitoring and permit deeper engagement with sensation and experience.

2. State Transition
Attention begins to shift away from ordinary monitoring, evaluation, distraction, and cognitive control and toward sensory and experiential engagement.

3. Absorption
Attention becomes increasingly immersive. Self-monitoring decreases and awareness becomes more deeply organized around sensation, imagery, emotion, or other aspects of the experience.

4. Sensory Amplification
Sensory, interoceptive, emotional, and internally generated signals intensify and become increasingly integrated.

5. Orgasmic Release
When sufficient integration and activation occur, orgasm emerges as a peak neurophysiological event.
The important idea is that different pathways may lead into these shared regulatory conditions.
Where the Learning Happens
The word learning is central to Orgasmic Learning.
Just as repeated experience helps us learn to ride a bike, speak a new language, or play the piano, repeated experience may also strengthen the nervous system's capacity for orgasmic access. In this sense, we can learn to become orgasmic.
The framework proposes that repeated access to orgasm-supportive states or conditions may strengthen the nervous system's ability to recognize, enter, stabilize, and re-enter those states.
This idea is consistent with principles of experience-dependent neuroplasticity, through which repeated experiences can strengthen neural processes over time.
With repeated experience, orgasmic access may become more stable, flexible, and transferable beyond the pathway or conditions through which it was first learned.
A Different Way to Think About Orgasmic Difficulty
For some women, orgasmic difficulty may occur even when desire is present, arousal is sufficient, and stimulation is adequate.
When all of those ingredients are present and orgasm still does not occur, women may be left wondering why their bodies are not responding as expected, or feeling as though something is wrong with them.
Orgasmic Learning offers a different way to understand what may be happening.
If desire, arousal, and stimulation are present, is the nervous system able to make and sustain the transition into the state in which orgasm becomes possible?
From this perspective, the difficulty may not be a lack of stimulation or effort. Performance monitoring, cognitive distraction, anxiety, threat perception, difficulty remaining immersed in sensation, or loss of sensory intensity may interfere with the nervous system's progression into and through an orgasm-supportive state.
The question shifts from "Why can't I orgasm?" to "What does my nervous system need in order to access and sustain the state in which orgasm becomes possible?"
The Science Behind Orgasmic Learning
Orgasmic Learning brings together research from sexual neuroscience, psychophysiology, attentional absorption, interoception, imagery, hypnosis, non-genital orgasm, altered states of consciousness, and experience-dependent neuroplasticity.
The framework builds upon established behavioral, psychological, relational, mindfulness-based, and stimulation-based approaches by examining how processes such as attention, sensory access, interoception, inhibition and excitation, absorption, and state regulation may interact in orgasmic access.
Rather than replacing existing approaches, Orgasmic Learning provides a framework for understanding how these mechanisms may converge within the state-dependent process through which orgasm becomes possible.
Current Research Status
The Orgasmic Learning framework and the Neuroregulatory Model of Female Orgasm were developed by Suzanne Mulvehill, PhD, Founder of the Female Orgasm Research Institute and Female Orgasm Training Institute.
Manuscripts formally describing both frameworks are currently under peer review. The frameworks are grounded in a substantial body of previously published research, including Dr. Mulvehill's peer-reviewed research on cannabis and female orgasmic function.
